Things Come Together
Tauranga SAGE Precon League - Week 2
This week things really came together for the silver age precon league as I popped into Gateway Games midweek and collected the 2 boxes of packs. Gateway Games have kindly helped out by adding a play mat and a couple of pre-release packs to our prize pool.
Organising
The way that I’m allocating the prizes:
1st - Antiquity pack + choice of pre-release packs
2nd - Antiquity pack
3rd - Compendium pack + other pre-release pack
4th-9th - Compendium pack
3 random draws where the person picks from the play mat and 2xPursuit of Knowledge cards (Once you have won a random draw you are not in the subsequent draws so we get 3 different winners)
Last week I hadn’t decided how to figure out the finances/packs during the league as it was all planned for 8 players. The addition of a 9th player threw that math out of kilter.
In the end I’m having everyone pay $55. That means I have to find an extra 16 packs. I’ll provide 7 of those so that everyone gets either:
6 packs + Antiquities pack
7 packs
7 packs is worth 7*$9.20=$64.40 so it’s like players are getting 1 pack for free. I’ll cover the extra 7 packs from the $55 and store credits that I got when buying the boxes.
That means if players want to have a 7th pack then they have to supply that themselves.
There was also a comment that by not getting a pack in a bye week you fell behind the other players and your deck could be weaker. So players can add a pack during their bye week if they would like to do so, at their own expense.
These are things I will need to think about when I plan the precon league for Chapter 3.
The Future
Silver Age precon Chapter 3 decks are due out sometime in quarter 2 of this year or April-June. We are 2 weeks into our 9 week league for Chapters 1 & 2 meaning we’ll finish around the 10th of April.
I’m thinking that season 2 of our precon league will be when Chapter 3 is released. Players will be able to chose from Chapters 1, 2 & 3 but can not chose the hero that they have previously played in the precon league.
Selecting Heroes
Our list of heroes in the league:
We have 3x Fai, 2x Iyslander and 1 each of Arakni, Enigma, Kayo and Viserai.
Nobody wanted to play Azelea, Bravo, Dash or Dorinthea. Dorinthea has taken a bashing online so I’m not so surprised about that. The others though are a little surprising to me.
I’m planning on talking to everyone and finding out why they chose those heroes.
James - Iyslander
I have only known James to play Gravy in CC. Clearly there was no necromancer for James to play in the percon league. His reasoning for going for the ice wizard was to try something new. Which is as good a reason as any.
Declan - Arakni
In CC Declan has been playing Kayo recently, making sure he gets as much game time in the hero before he LLs. Before that I knew him as an Oscilio player. So I was surprised to see him playing Arakni.
He was going to play Kayo but Matt got the last copy in the store and so Declan had to go with something new and decided to try out the assassin.
Round 1
Roydon (Fai) VS Caleb (Viserai) - Caleb (Viserai) won
Matt (Kayo) VS James (Iyslander) - Matt (Kayo) won
ET (Fai) VS Declan (Arakni) - ET (Fai) won
Paul (Iyslander) VS Daughter (Fai) - Daughter (Fai) won
Lee (Enigma) got the bye
Catching up on Round 1 results, my daughter beat me which isn’t unusual.
Round 2
Roydon (Fai) VS Paul (Iyslander) - Roydon (Fai) won
ET (Fai) VS James (Iyslander) - ET (Fai) won
Lee (Enigma) VS Daughter (Fai) - Daughter (Fai) won
Matt (Kayo) VS Caleb (Viserai) - TBD
Declan (Arakni) got the bye
Fai proved to be dominant in Round 2 winning all 3 of his matchups. The feeling is that Fai and Kayo are the 2 strongest decks.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Viserai copes with Kayo, having already seen off one of the Fai decks.
Table
With the prevailing view of Fai and Kayo being the stronger decks, I think we could already be seeing a top 4 or 5 vrs the rest of the field split. However it is still very early and there are a lot of people learning their decks at the moment.
